DCA Audition Criteria
Music
On the day of the scheduled audition, students must demonstrate the ability to read music and be prepared to take a written test of basic music theory knowledge.
Students will be given a sight-reading piece of appropriate grade level and must demonstrate the ability to follow musical direction.Additional requirements for specific areas as follows:
Vocal Music
Students must sing, from memory, two (2) selections. One selection must be classical* with the other of the student's choice. Students must provide their own accompanist or taped accompaniment.

Concert Band and Jazz Band
Students must prepare and play, on their major instrument, a selection of no less than one movement from a grade 3 solo taken from the FBA approved music* list and all major scales four flats through 4 sharps.

Orchestra (Strings) Music
Students will be asked to perform 2 scales from the following list as appropriate for their instrument:
Violin- G, D, C (2 Octaves)Viola- C, D, G (2 Octaves)
Cello- C, D, G (2 Octaves) Bass- D, G, C (1 Octave)Students must prepare and play a solo* (with or without accompaniment) on their major instrument.
*Each applicant is expected to prepare a solo work. A prospective student should work with their current teacher to find and prepare a solo. Students may contact DCA for a list of suggested works.
Piano
Students must prepare and play, with sheet music, two selections. One selection must be classical* with the other of the student's choice. Students must demonstrate the ability to play all major scales up to 3 sharps or flats and will be given a sight reading piece of appropriate grade level.

Commercial Music
A portfolio containing a studio demo or live recording of solo or group work is recommended. At least one year of private lessons, or one-year experience in an instrumental or vocal ensemble is preferred. Portfolios may contain cassette or CD performances, or written evaluations from festivals or competitions. Included in the portfolio should be a resume of the student’s past musical achievements, a short bio, and a statement of music career goals and objectives.
