Dillard Center for the Arts

In addition to a rigorous academic program*, DCA offers an intensive arts curriculum for students who demonstrate talent and strong desire.

Each discipline offers a wide range of technique, performance and theory/history classes.

 

Disciplines currently offered by DCA include:

 

 Dance

The dance curriculum is designed to prepare college, conservatory or professional track dancers. The students are exposed to many styles of dance but the emphasis in on traditional western concert dance. Both lower and upper level students receive intensive technical instruction in ballet, modern and jazz as well as movement theory, dance history, injury prevention, anatomy, nutrition and music theory for the dancer. Opportunities for performance combine with this instruction to provide a strong foundation in the study of dance.

 Music (Instrumental, Vocal, Piano & Commercial Music)

The Music program is designed to give students a variety of instructional and performance opportunities. Individual vocal and instrumental instruction, ensemble participation and many different performance settings are offered to increase the students’ technical proficiency in both lower and upper level study. Upper level study in Advanced Placement Music Theory provides an opportunity for students to secure college credit while in high school. Course work in theory and music history combined with technical instruction provides an excellent instructional setting for musical and experience.

 Theatre (Acting, Musical & Technical)

Students enrolled in the Theatre program are given the opportunity for training in all aspects of theatre production with a major emphasis in performance, musical or technical theatre. Course offerings for all students include voice and diction, theatre history, acting styles, movement and production skills. Upper level classes in the students’ major area of interest are designed to supplement the basic lower level studies and to help develop the student to his full potential for scholarships to advanced study beyond high school.

Students enrolled in the Technical Theatre are given the opportunity for training in all aspects of technical theatre. Course offering for all students include Stagecraft, Design of Scenery, Costumes, Lighting and Sound for use in theatrical production and the execution of those designs for actual performance. Scenic Construction, Stage Management, Publicity, and Theatre Management are also taught. Technical production in all of the performing arts areas is an integral part of the learning experience.

 Visual Arts (2-D & 3-D)

The Visual Arts program offers a curriculum which will guide development of skills, concepts and imaginative exploration in a wide variety of media. Students experience courses in drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, jewelry, crafts and art history. A portfolio of individual work is initiated at the beginning of study in lower level courses and developed throughout the program. All upper level students are provided the opportunity to earn college credit through their Advanced Placement Portfolio courses.
